September

General Garden

September is normally the harvesting month !

Seed collecting around the garden (including sunflower seeds).

Trim conifers.

Vegetable Planters

Dig up any remaining spuds if they are ready now. ALL TUBERS must be removed as any left will become not only a weed but a reservoir for potato blight spores. Fork over / rotovate !!!

Directly sow (into well watered channels) spring onions, radish, peas, rocket, garlic and spring cabbages.

Fruit Cage

Tidy up the summer fruiting raspberries. Cut off the canes that have fruited and tie in the new shoots that will flower next year.

Tidy up the strawberries also cutting off foliage about 1″ from the ground. Remove 3 year old plants and replace with new.

Growing in the Greenhouse

Keep feeding/watering the tomatoes – constantly check for pests and keep the side shoots in check.

The aubergines, chilli and sweet peppers together with tomatoes and cucumbers should be ready now.

Harvest

Dig up any remaining spuds if they are ready now. ALL TUBERS must be removed as any left will become not only a weed but a reservoir for potato blight spores. Fork over / rotovate !!!

Runner beans will continue to produce until frost strikes.

Last of the peas should be coming in now also.
